A CALL TO BEING DOERS OF THE WORD

 Anchor scripture; James 1:21-25 (ESV)

“22 But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. 23 For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man who looks intently at his natural face in a mirror. 24 For he looks at himself and goes away and at once forgets what he was like. 25 But the one who looks into the perfect law, the law of liberty, and perseveres, being no hearer who forgets but a doer who acts, he will be blessed in his doing.”

From verse 22, one who doesn't do what word of God is required of him or her and focuses only on listening is deceiving  himself or herself. The word of God is being illustrated as the mirror where we are called upon to check ourselves and take action where necessary for our spiritual growth.

2 Timothy 3:16 ( ESV) "All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness."

The word is designed to teach us of the things we don't know, correct us when we are wrong and above all,  to be equipped with potential abilities that will sustain us in living a righteous life. It is not what we know that will help us through our journey of salvation but what we do with what we know. It  is  therefore our responsibility as believers to take heed of the word of God and let our lives reflect it.

Sometimes as believers we fail to put the word of God into practice because of having little faith. We tend to compare the scriptures with our own understanding, and intellect. The Bible makes it clear that God's way is far away than that of humans.

Isa 55: 8-9 (ESV)

"8 For my thoughts are not your thoughts,
Neither are your ways my ways, declares the Lord.
9For as the heavens are higher than the earth,
so are my ways higher than your ways
and my thoughts than your thoughts."

From the book of Hebrews 11, we are some of the patriarchs of faith who pleased God to their end. These men took the word raw as he said without compromising any other way. Abrahan was told to leave his homeland to go where God will show him. He had no idea of where he was going, but he trusted God and let him take control of his life from henceforth. Noah was instructed to build an ark which took 120 years for the flood to take place. In all those years he waver not at the promise of the Lord and at the end he was saved and his household.

As believers sometimes we think God is too slow to solve our matter. We want him to work at our pace and at the end we find ourselves staggering at his promises. This is because we feel as if we have waited for so long. We are called upon to see that we grow in faith which will make our walk with God delightsome.

Then how do we grow in faith?

Through reading and meditating on the word of God.

“All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness.” 2 Timothy 3:16 (ESV)

Through  trusting and hoping  in God's promises.

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart
    and lean not on your own understanding;
in all your ways submit to him,
and he will make your paths straight.” Prov 3:5-6

Through fellowshipping with the brethren

25 not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near. Hebrews 10:25
